Player contribution

Metrics · player · xG per 90

npxG+xA

flagship metric · data to Mon 12 Oct 2026

How much a player adds to his side's chances per 90 minutes, as a shooter and as a creator: his non-penalty xG plus his expected assists.

For a player-season: the non-penalty xG of his own shots plus the xG of the shots he set up, divided by his league minutes, times 90. Goalkeepers have none.

  • npxG per 90: his own chances
  • xA per 90: the chances he set up

What goes in

our base data only
  • The shots and the line-ups of the five leagues since 2014-15, with 11footy xG; the minutes each player was on the pitch.
  • The player's role of the season, to compare him with players who do the same job.

How it is computed

the formula in words
  1. contribution per 90 = 90 x (npxG + xA) / league minutes.
  2. Shown with its percentile within his role and season, five leagues together, among the players with the minimum of minutes.

When to trust it

sample and threshold policy
  • A player-season needs 900 league minutes for the number, a percentile and a place in a ranking; goalkeepers have none.
  • Under 450 minutes a line is marked a small sample.
  • Percentiles are within the player's role and season, five leagues together.
  • The check below uses player-seasons with 900+ league minutes whose two halves each have 300+ minutes.

How well it works

worked out from the data, not typed in
  • Over 17,887 player-seasons the even and the odd matches agree at r = 0.81 for npxG + xA per 90 against 0.61 for goals + assists per 90.
Number, per 90Even v odd matches, rWhole season, reliability
npxG + xA per 90 (11footy)0.810.89
npxG per 900.800.89
xA per 900.650.79
Goals + assists per 900.610.76
Goals above expected per 90 (no penalties)0.030.06
Sample: 17,887 player-seasons of outfield players with 900+ league minutes whose even and odd matches each have 300+ minutes, since 2014-15. "Even v odd": the correlation of a player's per-90 number over his even matches with the same number over his odd matches. A number that agrees with itself says something stable about the player rather than about a few matches.

What it does not tell you

limits
  • It says nothing about defending, ball progression, pressing or what a player does without the ball.
  • A penalty taker's penalties are left out, a set-piece taker's corners and free kicks are in: read a taker's xA with that in mind.
  • Compare within a role: a striker's number and a full-back's are not made of the same things.
  • It rests on 11footy xG, with the limits of the xG metric (xA counts the shot, not the pass).

Data to (the latest league match played), built . Unless a season is chosen, every view shows 2025-26 (2026-27 is still young: 0 players have 900 league minutes so far, so the numbers are of 2025-26 until half as many as last season do.). Percentiles and per-90 ranks from 900 league minutes, within the player's role, five leagues together; under 450 minutes a small sample.
